2. When that I was (Shakespeare, Twelfth Night) Dial up Broadband

"Like most of my 15 Shakespeare settings, these were written for productions directed by my late cousin James O'Reilly. In the play, "Orpheus" is sung by Anne Boleyn's chambermaid Meg O'Fundy, Who is trying to soothe the queen's growing (and justified) fears that King Henry will have her beheaded. "When that I was" is a wistful epilogue sung by the clown Feste. Neither song has anything to do with the plot."

Songs 3 and 4: Lesley Goodman, mezzo-soprano; Shirley Trissell, piano.
In the opera, completed in 1980, the arias are sung by Lady Ysabel. (She exists only in my libretto, not in the original James Thurber story.) "If her mother were alive" is a confidential aside to the audience: As the 10-year-old Princess Lenore is asking her father to bring her the moon, Lady Ysabel lets us know that she herself is fond of the widowed King, and would like to take a hand in Lenore's upbringing, preferably as her stepmother. After all efforts to grant the Princess' wish have apparently failed, Lady Ysabel sings "She's just a little girl" in attempt to comfort the stricken King.

The opera "Many Moons," based on a story by James Thurber, was performed several times in the Chicago area, and in 1990 was presented in Budapest. Hungary, by the Franz Liszt Academy of Music.

5. Elegy Dial up Broadband

The violinist Aaron Rosand requested this piece in memory of a mutual friend, Bernard Elchen, who was also a violinist and teacher. (Rosand performs the "Elegy" on a CD under the Artkor label, ART 2735). The middle Eastern tonality reflects Bernie's Jewish heritage. Toward the end the sorrowing mood gives way to a dance: that is somehow like Bernie too.

7. Christmas Song: Green Be the Garland Dial up Broadband

8. A Dream of the Rood Dial up Broadband

"A Dream of the Rood," a setting for chorus and harp of an 8th Century Anglo-Saxon poem put into standard English, was premiered in 1988 by His Majestie's Clerkes (now Bella Voce).
